Many years ago, I received a burden to pray against government corruption, in Malaysia. In 2018, we joined many Malaysians from around the world, interceding for the elections. Four billion dollars were missing from government coffers and PM Najib, along with others, were accused of stealing the money.
Several people were killed, while trying to expose this corruption. Malaysians were outraged, demanding a change in government and an end to corruption. The former Prime Minister, Tun Dr. Mahathir, came out of retirement at the age of 90, and joined with former minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to form the opposition.
People traveled from across the world, to vote in the election. Friends collected ballots and took bundles of them home to Malaysia, to be posted. The nation was on edge, demanding change. Change however, was very unlikely.
Coming up to the election, PM Najib changed the electoral boundaries to strongly favour his party, UMNO. He also gave a gift of RM500, not a bribe, to citizens just before the election. It was impossible for the opposition to win, but God had spoken through the prophets, the opposition would win! It was a huge test of faith.
We prayed before the elections, then when the polls opened, we began praying again. We kept praying until the results were announced, 2-3am the next day. That same morning, the King had problems installing Tun Dr. Mahathir, so we began praying again until the afternoon, when Tun Dr. Mahathir was installed.
The following day, news came saying East Malaysia had problems with their elections, and the ruling party could win overall. We went back into prayer for the next two days, until the opposition party was declared the winner. These four days of prayer were our longest, and most intense, period of prayer and emphasizes the importance of following “The Widow’s Model” of prayer.
Our national news channel announced, “Today Malaysia experienced two miracles. One, the opposition party won the election. Two, there was a peaceful transition of power!” Prayer prevailed, and the opposition party won, running on a ticket of anti-corruption. People on the streets said, now I can’t get any extra pocket money because I’ll be prosecuted. There was a fast and firm stand against corruption at government level. The nation had changed.
Unfortunately, the ruling party was upended two years later, and people went back to their old ways. Three years ago, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim won the election for a second time, joining with the former UMNO party. Again there was an anti-corruption movement, but it really lacked the will to bring real change.
This is now beginning to turn right side up. PM Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has announced “Step up – embrace professionalism, coordination, and accountability – or step out and let others do the job. Malaysia has waited long enough.” (read here) Government workers who can not act on corruption in their departments, leave their post and PM Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim will find someone who will enforce anti-corruption measures. He says, everyone has had three years to implement the laws, so do it now or leave! A wise move.
PM Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has installed MP Hannah Yeoh, a Christian, to observe government departments in the capital Kuala Lumpur. MP Yeoh has been successful in all she has done since being in Parliament. A very worthy person to lead this difficult job. Many local people protested that a Chinese person should have this job, but PM Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim stood by his decision ,and fully supports MP Yeo.
Many years ago, my burden was to pray for corruption at government level, but I have dropped the ball, taking my eyes off the target. Corruption at government level, is the single biggest cause of poverty in a nation, according to the United Nations. It must be stopped!
Praise God, the Prime Minister is focusing on this important topic. We are now refocusing on interceding against corruption.
