The MMP voting system, is designed to produce a Parliament which better reflects the people’s wishes, rather than just a two horse race. Not that National and Labour are horses, it’s just an expression. 🙂
Peter Williams explains, what happens to the unqualified minor Party votes. Unqualified minor Parties, are those which fail to win an electoral seat or do not get more than 5% of the total votes. Those Party votes, will be given to the Parties which did get seats in Parliament. In 2023 Labour gained an extra five seats in Parliament and National an extra three more seats, from the minor Parties which did not qualify.
Therefore, it is important to be realistic and ask ourselves a question. Will the minor Party I’m voting for, gain an electoral seat or cross the 5% threshold? If the answer is no, then best for conservatives to vote National for their electoral vote, and NZFirst or Act for their Party vote. This way, a center right government will succeed. It’s surprising PM Luxon and Key do not agree with strategic voting. National are so low in the polls, along with Labour so the polls are probably reasonably accurate, National will not get any Party List seats. I cannot understand why Luxon and Key do not realise this.
Previously, Labour under Helen Clarke and Te Pati Maori have voted strategically, so Luxon and Key should understand the voting system. They should have placed Bishop, Willis and other valuable members, in safe seats well before the election. I think they are asleep at the wheel. They have messed up and still haven’t figured it out!
We must be praying for Luxon and team, for the good Lord to give them wisdom from above. Also, we must be praying a center right government wins. Even when voting strategically, the win will be slim! Pray pray pray.
